Pencil to Pixel Directions

These are the directions I pass out to my Production class at Portfolio Center where we turn a pencil drawing into a crisp marker drawing and then into an Illustrator vector file. The whole point of this exercise is to learn to maintain the original energy in work done by hand when moved into a digital environment.

I got the original idea from this fabulous blog at Instructables dot com.

Examples of work created from this process can be found here.

new portrait

Hi Friends,

Here's another self portrait I did with the Production class at Portfolio Center. So much fun! The idea for this assignment came from Instructables.com and I use it every quarter. We will be finishing these up next week, so I just might do another.

Instructions can be found here.

Sada

I did this of Sada the other day. Snapped the original picture of her right before the rehearsal dinner of her wedding. Lovely neck. Mark Strand calls the neck the "sleeve of my voice." Such a beautiful metaphor.

Easter 09

I just finished this portrait of Anton and myself searching for Easter eggs last Spring. Right under the japanese maple in our front yard. A lovely memory.

Nother Self Portrait

I'll be working on this one with the new Emotive Type Summer crop of PC students. Awesome group of people. Lovable, honest, hard-working and fun.

Japanese Maple

Here's a portrait of Anton and me I'm tinkering with. Yummy, yummy colors under my favorite tree in our yard.
